The Corpus Callosum.
Arrrgggghhhh, there are so many things I want to say about last Thursday’s service. I see myself writing a twenty page essay, and let’s face it, you don’t want to be here all day…do you? lol! I’ll do my best to keep this short.
First, for those of you who are not aware, John is my husband. What Rob said… ALL true. John is an adventurer at heart. He wants to live every moment with abundance, and so he puts himself out there. He tries things, he learns. Yup, I’m there for it all. The guitar ( every day I hear him practice ) and can I say this? I look forward to hearing one song in full. LOL! John is always looking, never satisfied. He searches everything, and it can really drive me crazy. BUT, if it were not for that incredible curiosity, we would not be at Church today. John needed to understand how to put Science and God together. Gladly, I can say that he has come to a balance in his heart, and God is right there with him.
Second, I do consider myself an intellectual of sorts ( ok, ok, insert joke here ). When Rob started to speak about the right and left hemispheres of the brain, I perked right up. I studied this stuff in University, you know! Well, It wasn’t long before I started saying to myself “He’s missing something, oh, he’s so close, but Rob’s missing something!”
The Corpus Callosum! Yup, here is intellectual Chantal. You see, the left and right hemispheres are connected by this tissue called the Corpus Callosum. It is the fissure that connects the two sides, and allows the passage of information between the two. The crazy thing is that without the joining tissue , we are disabled. Back in the days, when they were researching cures for epilepsy, they realized that severing this tissue would reduce the severity of the seizures. At first, the patients responded well, but it was not long before the specialists realized the incredible damage they had done.
When the Corpus Callosum is severed, the communication between the two hemisphere ceases. What happens is dreadful. the left side of your body, has absolutely no idea what the right side is doing, and vice versa. Think of it for a minute, you want to go for a walk, your right foot moves, your left one doesn’t. Yes, I know that I am over-simplifying this way too much. But the reality of the situation, without the Corpus Callosum, the understanding of our physical world, how we move, the way that we think, EVERYTHING we once knew, were able to do, or to understand is gone. Our eyes become the only hold we have on life, because seeing things is the only way that both sides of the brain gets any information. We need our Corpus Callosums.
Now, what does all of this have to do with my journey, my faith, my God, and dare I say…Science? Both sides of the brain communicate in order to provide us with a better understanding of our world. God has provided us with yet another opportunity to learn, to understand, to analyze, and to discover him. On the right side, God has given us science. He continuously allow us to explore the unknown, to dissect it, to rebuild it, and he has give us the curiosity to search for more.
On the left side, God has provided us with sight, sounds, touch, speech, smell, and emotions. He has given us the tools to discover him through our senses. In this way, we can experience the awesomeness that he is. Yes, there are people that do not have all the senses, but as Rob put it, we have only just started to use the brain that we have. I would not be surprised to find out we had more senses. It just makes sense to me.
So wrapping this up, God and Science can and do go hand in hand. We search for answers in order to explain the world around us. We search for answers which in turn allow us to see how amazing God is. No matter how many answers we get, there will always be more questions. The harder I search the more it leads me to see just how incredible God’s creations are. God gave us science to learn, to discover and to live. Science can, completely reaffirm someones belief in God. It does for me.
You see, as much as science tries to explain why things are the way they are, it does not fully explain everything. It will never be able to explain HOW or WHY we got here in the first place. Only God knows, and only God will reveal it all someday… Until then we can sit in awe as we begin to understand the complexities of our world. God, in his wisdom, created all of this with such detail, and precision. But he also provided us with the curiosity to want to understand. God created science.
