Apostolic Prayers

The lesson on Thursday was on Apostolic Prayers.  Paul had four “apostolic prayers” recorded in the Bible.  These prayers are listed below.  The message being taught was that Paul’s prayers for the people of Colossians was that they may have complete knowledge, wisdom and understanding of God’s grace.  In Colossians 1: 10 …. 10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work…Paul speaks about the process, a journey for the people living their lives bearing the fruits of the spirit… joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

The next part of the prayer speaks about being strengthened with power.  Rob teaches that the purpose of being empowered by God is to have the endurance and patience to life a life worthy of the Lord.

We as Christ followers have been given God’s grace and empowered by God so that we may live a life abundant.  A life filled with joy and happiness.

Colossians 1:9-14

9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives,[a] 10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, 12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you[b] to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Ephesians 1:16-19

That power is the same as the mighty strength

Ephesians 3:14-19

A Prayer for the Ephesians

14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family[a] in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Philippians 1:9-11

9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, 10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.

Rob’s prayer

Father, I want to know you completely.  I ask that you help me to know your will and to gain wisdom and understanding of the truth of your amazing grace.  Help me to believe better so that my behaviour will flow naturally out of my belief.

I realize that I can’t even believe better without your power.  So strengthen me so that I may have the endurance and the patience to discover all I can about you.

Help me to understand that I have a share in the inheritance of freedom and grace that you offer.  It is because of what you’ve already done, that I can be filled with joy and thankfulness.
