Whispers | Be Still

whispers_featured1Last night, we began a new series called Whispers. Our focus in the next three weeks will be hearing the voice of God.

As a special treat, we invited Jason Boucher, pastor of Lifecentre (and my cohost on SlicesOfLife.ca) to introduce the series. He did an amazing job, and you’ll be able to watch the video here (once it’s uploaded).

Jason talked about learning to hear the voice of God in the midst of all the noist and busyness of our lives. That like a child can hear the voice of his parents from the mayhem of the playground, we can also learn to hear God’s voice. But it takes spending time with God every day. A child recognizes mom or dad’s voice, because they are in relationship daily.

The main scripture used last night was Psalm 46:10. “Be still and know that I am God.” Earlier this week, Jason and I posted a video about what it means to be still, so take a few minutes and watch it. Ultimately, stillness is not the same as quietness. You can be quiet, and yet still have so much going on that you are unable to be still.

Stillness is the act of focusing. It’s pausing from the busyness. When it comes to being still before God, stillness is the act of pausing so that you can focus on God’s place in your life. It’s reminding yourself that he is there, with you. At every moment.

If you’ve heard me speak much, you know that I’m a big fan of pointing out our personal responsibility in our spirituality. We make choices. No one forces us to do things. I love that Jason picked up on that theme last night. He pointed out that all of us have things in our life that we must choose to change. Only when we do that can we truly find the place of stillness.

When was the last time you were still before God? I would love to hear some of you share your experiences with being still. Why not post a comment about it.
