Envy and the Mourner

Envy is the second deadly sin, and it can be ferocious. It doesn’t care that sometimes life can be pretty good. Envy invites me to look at others and see all the good they have, and it tells me that my life is worthless in comparison. Envy encourages me to do whatever it takes to escape the life I have. Ultimately, envy is the rejection of the life God has given me.

On the flip side, Jesus invited us to mourn and in doing so, we would be blessed. You see, mourning, like envy, acknowledges that sometimes things are not good. Sometimes things are not pleasant. Envy causes us to hate our circumstance and want someone else’s. Mourning causes us to invite others into our lives to walk with us through our difficulties. Mourning is done in community.
