Sloth and the Hungry
Sloth is not exactly a common word these days. As a result, we often misunderstand what it means. We think it’s just another word for laziness. In fact, that is the most common way to explain sloth. In many church circles, we call laziness one of the deadly sins. However, sloth is far more than simple laziness. Sloth is about indifference. Many believe that sloth slides into our lifestyle more easily than any of the other deadly sins. Suddenly we find ourselves in a place where we simply do not care about the plight of those around us. Drug users, video game addicts, sport fanatics, and even workaholics can all be poisoned by sloth.
Jesus comes along and offers the antithesis for sloth: hungering for righteousness. He suggests that when we allow our lives to be driven by a hunger for the things of God, we will be filled. We will experience satisfaction and fulfillment in a way that a slothful person could never imaging.
So, join us this week as we look at Sloth and the Hungry.
